History

World Chess Champions

There were outstanding chess players before the formation of FIDE. Players and competition games are known since 15th Century. However, only in 1886 we had the 1st Official World Chess Champion.

In 1993 a group of Players led by Garry Kasparov unsatisfied with the way FIDE was organizing the World Championship split from FIDE and created a parallel organization called PCA (Professional Chess Association).

From 1993 until 2006 there were two world Championships and two World Champions. These were the PCA World Chess Champions:
1993 to 2000     - Garry Kasparov            (Russia)
2000 to 2006     - Vladimir Kramnik          (Russia)
Although they could not be consider the Official World Chess Champions, they were without doubt the best players of that time.

Reunification was celebrated in 2006 with a match between Topalov and Kramnik. Kramnik won and after 13 years there was again an unified and undisputed World Chess Champion.
